ELECTION SPECIAL: The big issues politicians haven't spoken about
Переглядів 7 тис.21 годину тому
On Monday, we released our comprehensive analysis of the parties manifestos at an event in Westminster. After some time digesting and analysing the manifestos, we’ve concluded that neither of the main parties is being honest with voters about the challenges we face in coming years. So, what are the manifestos missing? What are the big challenges facing us? And what information should voters be ...

How to grow the economy | IFS Zooms In

After years of sluggish growth and flatlining productivity, a rare political consensus has emerged that growing the economy is one of the key priorities of the next government. With an election on the way, we're bound to hear pledges and policies on how to get the economy growing again. But how can we actually grow the economy? Can we get productivity growth back on track? Labour always knew they would win Election 2024 given the dire state of the country and the Tories. Easy therefore for them to diagnose and list all the problems without having to bother much about explaining their policies on dealing with them. In the fortnight since this podcast, Starmer and his senior colleagues continue getting away with word salad responses to journalists and weak rebuttals to desperate Tories, leaving us still little or none the wiser. Once in power this Friday, faced with a badly-bruised Tory opposition of perhaps 150 - or even just 100 - MPs, they'll have an open goal to make things up as they go along.

Government's don't need to borrow money, it's a myth. They can spend whatever they want as long as it doesn't cause inflation. This money can be created for free by BoE, the govt doesn't have to wait for taxes or borrow to spend.

You didn't mention pointless government waste, HS2, PPE that doesn't work, the Rwanda scheme. What if there was a serious penalty, like capitol punishment, for egregious squandering and wasteful spending. Seriously, all governments waste money, and you clever guys and gals know that, I'd like to see a podcast covering some of the less cost-effective spending areas and your one-line examples of refactoring those, maybe a top 10 or 15.

State schools, most way behind in their offerings vs private schools are not going to transformed by a scattering of extra maths teachers. The NHS needs 6% investment to compare to New Labour days, & even under Tony Blair was badly performing in chronic conditions (I know I have one and have been left with serious disability by both Tory and Labour spending) will not be quickly transformed by 1% extra investment and some reform. Taxing wealth could boost public services on their knees.

Really telling & sad that this important group doesn’t have more subscribers. Your intervention on the election was needed because MSM has not done enough scrutiny. I disagree with saying the Green Party and reform input poisoned the discourse though. Given that my lay response to your analysis is more money has to be found and given that we do have a tax take less than much of Europe, I think that it was improper to essentially discount & discard those at least asking for honesty and offering bigger thinking & tax in scale with need.

  • @galinor7

Yeah. Same here in the EU. In Spain, the economy is pretty fragile. Petrol and fuel are an identical price to the UK yet accomodation is more expensive than the UK outside of London. People earn around two thirds of the UK. I'm a Brit. I live in Spain with my Spanish wife.

"Boo". says Sunak. "Labour will destroy Britain forever in 100 days". The Tories already broke it in 14 years with austerity that cut the economy, real wages and public services to desperation. They rushed and bungled a hard brexit to avoid one day of EU scrutiny and money transparency laws to apply to the UK and caused a permanent loss of 4%-5.5% of GDP including £40-£50bn in lost tax revenue p.a., according to 4 studies, including by the government. They mishandled Covid with late lockdowns and letting in an extra week of flights from India with a worse new variant, a total lack of preparation, treating PCP supplies as an opportunity to give hundreds of millions to their mates and putting patients with the disease into care homes with no protection ( 225,000 dead ). The cuts would deepen if they return and people on benefits, many of them working or sick ( 8 million and rising on NHS waiting lists) are already in debt and unable to pay bills and feed themselves. Food banks and pot holes alike, expanding and at record levels.

Can any party fix all this and guarantee growth? No. What can be done that could help: - review business rates to equalise the tax burden across different types of companies. - review/simplify planning processes to reduce costs/timescales to make infrastructure and housing development easier thus encouraging further external investment. - start to hold private companies accountable when delivering public services and gouging out profits whilst failing to deliver the investment required. Be prepared to renationalise if required as a last resort - push the accelerator on the Green transition to, in the medium term, drive down energy costs whilst encouraging investments creating jobs - encourage upskilling of workforce, reviewing the awful apprentice levy would be a good start - create a calmer political climate to make the uk a better place to invest - do NOT raise further revenue on the people’s whose income comes from selling their labour but on those who rely on ‘Passive income” ie close the gap a bit between the two as the first category will be more likely to return that money to the economy sooner - drive down nhs waiting lists to return people to active work - devolve more local investment decisions to the people who have the best understanding of an areas needs ie the locals - create a healthier, more constructive relationship with our nearest and largest trading partners ie EU. And no this doesn’t mean reversing brexit Clear ideas, none a silver bullet, but taken together should improve things. All of the above are contained in one of the manifestos out there.

Interesting how the definition of “rich” given at the start, was broken into 3, but all of which were people with very high incomes. Overall, isn’t intergenerational wealth, trust funds, low and avoidable inheritance tax a larger problem? The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree

14:22 we dont know why productivity is lower? That has shocked me! Here's three reasons: 1. Capital shallowing from population growth outstripping housebuilding, infrastructure development, and business investment. 2. Energy costs in the UK being far higher than our peers, sending manufacturing overseas. 2. Too much unskilled labour

I am confused here does the BOE not return the interest coupons BACK to the UK Government? In the USA the FED returns the interest back to the US Treasury which is why the debt held by FED is "free" money as the interest is returned back.

From what you are saying I conclude at some point there needs to be a rise in government borrowing. If the public finances deteriorate and there’s a bit of a run on sterling interest rates will start to rise. Someone actually predicted the IMF may need to step in. I see many similarities between today and the mid seventies, the number 10 beer and sandwiches era.

Lots of interesting stuff which is not being widely discussed. Media generally seems more interested in the betting scandal and what Farage had for breakfast. I'd rather hear about how parties will deal with the collapse of the judicial system (which is catastrophic for our democracy), 40bn black-hole in NHS finances, long-term strategic planning, tax reform and economic growth. All good subjects. I wish there was more coverage like this.

Why threaten their polling lead with specfics? They've learnt the lessons from the May campaign when she and her team outlined necessary changes to Social Care etc. Spunked a 20 plus lead.
